Job Summary

The Acute Care Registered Nurse is primarily responsible for delivering the necessary care that patients require to increase their likelihood of positive outcomes from medical treatment, caring for those who have urgent medical needs or require close monitoring, such as those recovering from surgery, injuries, or that are experiencing severe complications from chronic conditions such as diabetes or heart disease. The Acute Care Registered Nurse helps to stabilize patients, allowing them to transition to step-down care units in hospitals to support bed turnover, so other departments can continue to admit patients with serious injuries, conditions, and illnesses.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Administering blood transfusions and infusions.
  2. Monitoring patient’s vital signs.
  3. Diagnosing the causes of sudden changes in patient conditions and giving urgent treatments when required.
  4. Carrying out treatment plans by administering medication.
  5. Assessing diagnostic tests such as electrocardiograms (EKGs) and radiographs (X-rays) and performing them in some circumstances.
  6. Delivering emergency medical care, such as cardiac life support, when patients are in crisis.
  7. Updating patients’ health information to ensure accurate record keeping.
  8. Working with Physicians and other members of the care team to revise treatment plans when needed.

 

Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing from accredited university.

Job Summary

The Operating Room Registered Nurse assist the surgeons they work with by managing much of the hands-on patient care before and after a surgical procedure. During an operation, the Operating Room Registered Nurse is frequently present in the sterile environment as part of the surgical team, where they may administer medications and monitor patients in the recovery room immediately after surgery. Operating Room Registered Nurses commonly serve as the point of contact between patients and their families, and the surgeon or other doctors managing their care. In this capacity, the Operating Room Registered Nurse educates patients and explains complex procedures to lay people in plain language, as well as brings the questions and concerns of patients and families to the care team to ensure responsive care.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Performs the perioperative nursing role to include preoperative assessment of the patient, nursing care plan formulation, operative care plan implementation, and postoperative evaluation of the patient’s response/outcome.
  2. Assists in the setting up and performance of cases by opening of sterile pack, instruments, and supplies according to sterile technique.
  3. Prepares each patient for surgery by: positioning the patient in the appropriate position, preparing the patient’s operative site, confirming the procedure and site according to the surgeon’s history and physical and operating room team, and helping move the patient to and from the operating table.
  4. Keeps patients and their families informed about surgical procedures.
  5. Responds to sudden changes in patients’ health and manages occasional emergencies.
  6. Administers medication and uses medical equipment under the direction of the surgeon.
  7. Assists anesthesia personnel with the intubation/extubation of patients, the monitoring of fluid volume balance, the administration of blood and blood products, and the thermoregulation of the patient.
  8. Performs surgical counts (sponges, sharps, and instruments) and documents nursing care on legal records.
  9. Assists in the clean up of the operating room following surgery, including proper disposal of used supplies and sharps.
  10. Assumes responsibility for intra-operative patient safety related to positioning activities, the use of equipment, and the use of chemicals and solutions.
  11. Acts as the nursing advocate for the patient, upholding the patient’s rights.
  12. Monitors the patient’s level of consciousness, electrocardiogram, blood pressure, and oxygen saturation during local anesthetic procedures.
  13. Performs infection control activities to include observation of the surgical tram during procedures, taking corrective actions as needed to maintain aseptic technique.
  14. Provides a surgically clean environment for patient care and ensures the sterility of supplies and instrumentation used during operative procedures.
  15. Is knowledgeable of policies and procedures of the department and facility.
  16. Performs other related duties incidental to the work described herein, or as assigned by the Surgery Team Leader, OR Manager, and Director of Surgical Services.

Duties and Responsibilities
